Eric Thomas Royle was born in 1948 and was taught to draw from a very early age by his Grandfather. In 1963, he began his six year apprenticeship at the age of 15 and this early training helped in his apprenticeship to see beauty in line and lettering. After completing his apprenticeship, Eric went traveling around South East Asia, Australia and Europe, and on returning moved to Jersey, when he worked for fourteen years.

In 1987, Eric moved back to England, where he worked for R.H.Wilkins of Hatton Garden, London. The ten years spent with Ray Wilkins brought Eric into contact with the most demanding and difficult work and he became an accomplished hand engraver.

During this time work included; engravings for The Queen Mother, Princess Diana and other Royal Family members worldwide, a commission from John Major and Grand Slam trophies for Tennis Championships. Eric was also commissioned to create a complete engraving copy of an early Victorian Americas Cup, with lettering rarely seen, fancy block fishtail fonts and lashings of scrollwork.

Eric now has his own studio workshop and continues to engrave for many clients. Now at 63, Eric feels still the need for more knowledge, ‘engraving by hand is an art and like all arts worth doing, you never stop learning.’
