Malcolm Appleby is known primarily as an engraver – perhaps one of the most original working in contemporary metal today. Malcolm discovered engraving at John Wilkes Gun & Rifle Makers in Soho when he was at art school in the 1960′s. These skills he later applied to jewellery and metal forms. Such an unconventional background set the pattern for his idiosyncratic approach and style. Malcolm described creation of the art object as the basis of his working life. “The simplest and least expensive pieces should have the same inspirational quality as my most valued major works. Works of art should be made for everyone to enjoy. Engraving is central to my design and art: it is from engraving that my other skills have evolved. I enjoy harnessing other craftsmen’s skills to extend my own creative theories of form-related goldsmithing techniques.”
