My name is Ruaridh (Rory) Malcolmson, and I am the resident hand engraver within the busy workshops of Scottish silversmiths and Goldsmiths, Hamilton & Inches of George Street, Edinburgh.

My work here is of a general engraving nature, ranging from inscription work, crests, and other heraldic work to the design and creation of decoration on the silverware produced by my colleagues within our workshops.

This provides me with a wide range of challenges and opportunities to hone and improve my skills as an engraver, working on prestigious commissions for heads of state, civic officers, and major companies and organisations. For example, we recently produced a new mace for Scotland’s Lord Justice General This item featured a Royal Coat of Arms engraved by myself, and I had the great privilege of representing the company in presenting the mace to Her Majesty The Queen at the Palace of Holyrood House prior to Her Majesty formally presenting the mace herself to the Lord Justice General.

I began my engraving career as an apprentice with Mr. Jack Tinsley in 1971 at the age of 16, and have since worked within the field of general engraving in both England and in my native Scotland, sometimes in a self employed capacity and others working for specialist engraving companies, mints, etc. This has exposed be to a wide variety of techniques and styles of engraving, and I am most grateful to the many fine craftsmen with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned so much.

I would like to make special mention of Mr. Ray Wilkins, with whom I worked during the 1990′s, and from whom I learned a very great deal. I am most grateful to him for the opportunities afforded to me during my time with him, including the engraving of the F.A. Cup, live on television for the first time in 2001 at the first match played at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
